Caribbean Guinness Stout Punch

21.5.17 | Recipe by Renz

A combination of bitter, sweet and cool, this Guinness Punch is the perfect drink to cool down on a hot summer day.

And I'm back, with another drink.

I told you before I love punches. I definitely got that from my daddy. He was a punch man. In fact, my recipes like pumpkin punch and peanut punch were all provided by him.

This drink is popular in Trinidad as much as it is a Jamaican drink. How it's made varies from island to island.

This creamy mix of Guinness stout and milk, along with some spices really makes this perfect combination a hit.

How does Guinness punch taste?

I am not a big fan of Guinness by itself because of its bitter taste, but this punch is one of my favorites.

The flavor of the stout is not pungent at all. The milk cuts out the bitterness and the spices make this popular drink a perfect blend.

It's a well-blended drink, that has a creamy texture.

You get a little bit of sweet and a tad of bitter. And a whole lot of deliciousness.

It's the totally opposite idea of taste, say from a rum punch.

Benefits of Guinness punch

My mom made this religiously when I was growing up.

One reason was my dad loved it. Allegedly it's good for the back and for this reason it's also called "strong back drink". It's good for the back because of the nutrients provided.

Another reason is my mom insisted that it was an excellent tonic to drink when you are not feeling well.

Apparently, Guinness assists with blood clots and helps to lower the chances of heart attacks.

I figured that may be a trick reasoning she made up but the University of Wisconsin agrees with her.

What to use to make a stout punch?

Another recipe with simple ingredients that are mostly always on hand. The traditional recipe for Trinidad and Tobago includes some basic ingredients.

But check out the "additions" section for other versions.

Ingredients used to make Guinness punch.

  • Guinness extra stout beer - I typically stick to draught, extra stout, or foreign extra stout.
  • Sweetened condensed milk.
  • Whole milk - you can change this out to the type of milk you prefer. But make sure it doesn't add too much additional sweetness. If it does, then add less condensed milk. I've used oat milk as a replacement and liked it.
  • Angostura bitters.
  • Nutmeg.
  • Ground Cinnamon.

Making stout punch

This is what we call a 'mix and blend up". This really requires no effort and a good blender.

Combine and taste for sweetness. Adjust the condensed milk as needed depending on your tolerance for the stout.

Once you've got your right taste level, it's time to serve.

You can put it into the fridge to chill or go ahead and serve it over a handful of ice cubes.

Garnish with a teaspoon of cinnamon and some grated nutmeg.

What to pair with this Guinness punch

This is usually a drink you have after dinner or depending on how many additions you put, it can be an actual meal.

It can though, be paired with savory flavored dishes like accra or jerk chicken wings.

You can also make a float using some vanilla ice cream or even some Guinness ice cream.

Additions

Like peanut punch, there are other things people like to add to the mix for different versions of this drink.

  • Vanilla nutrament - This is most popular with the Jamaican Guinness punch recipe.
  • Vanilla supligen - Like nutrament, it can be used instead of milk.
  • Banana
  • Oats
  • Vanilla extract - you can add some (a teaspoon or so) of vanilla for additional flavor.

Storing any leftover punch

Leftovers for this can last in the fridge for up to five days. Store in an airtight bottle or jar in the refrigerator.
